Resources for learning to use your computer, and for computer security management
Your computer is a gateway to very considerable support for good mental health and for recovery from mental illness. It thus serves your interests to make good and safe use of your computer. Here are some of my favorite online resources relating to these two concerns.
Special note: Resources preceded by "‡"are considered especially useful for site visitors who are not mental health professionals.
Computer use - learning to make better use of your computer
- ‡ BBC Computer Tutor - "... for people who don't know how to use a keyboard, mouse or computer screen." To work through their tutorial, go to the website, "...choose your connection speed and press 'Start'. That's it!" Let the learning begin...
Compute safety and security
- ‡ CNET Security Center - "Your complete source of antivirus and Internet security information." Features good reviews and comparisons of available security software most people can use.
- U.S. Computer Emergency Readiness Team (US-CERT) - Has good material for both the non-technical and the technical reader. It's official description: "The United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team (US-CERT) is a partnership between the Department of Homeland Security and the public and private sectors. Established in 2003 to protect the nation's Internet infrastructure, US-CERT coordinates defense against and responses to cyber attacks across the nation."
How to print this page
Use the page print function built into your browser. It's usually an item in the File menu right below the caption of the window in which this page is displayed.
Only the page's core content will be printed. All images outside of the main content area, all navigation tools and links, and extraneous header and footer material will be omitted from the printed page.
Many browsers also have a print preview function on the same menu - you can use this to see how the printed page will look before you actually print it.
